Jacob Simon is a high school senior who got his start in musical theatre at the age of 5. His first role was the Magic Mirror in a funky production of Snow White, featuring the hits of the 70's, and his rendition of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" brought the house down. Since then, Jacob has performed in over 50 musicals. He is now a member of the Ensemble at Another Door Theatre Project, where he has played numerous roles including Moritz in Spring Awakening, the Emcee in Cabaret, Paul in A Chorus Line, and the Leading Player in Pippin.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
What immediately comes to mind for me is a piece of advice that many people have given to me, and I honestly don't know where I heard it first. The phrase is "You can't look forward if you're looking to the side," and I try to live my life by that. Especially in musical theatre, it's incredibly easy to waste time comparing myself to others, so whenever possible, I try to reclaim that time and use it to work on myself and improve my skills. I find that reminding myself of this advice helps me block out the inner critic and focus on my actual goals, whether I'm in a dance class or sitting in the waiting room at an audition.
