Who is your favorite queer icon?
My queer icon is David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992) queer multimedia artist and activist. I interviewed him a year or so before he died and our conversation changed the way I saw queer art and the obligation of the artist. He was quite ill with AIDS at the time, but that did not dim his intelligence, his compassion, his fire, or his need to create. His book, Close to the Knives, is one of the most powerful works I've ever read.
